What Is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation is a way of helping patients feel deeply relaxed during treatment. It is not the same as a general anaesthetic. You remain conscious throughout and are able to respond to your dentist, but the medication takes the edge off anxiety so significantly that most patients have little or no memory of the appointment afterwards.

Benefits of Dental Sedation

Sedation opens the door to treatment for patients who might otherwise avoid the dentist altogether, offering:

Reduced anxiety

Medication significantly lowers feelings of fear and tension, making the appointment feel far more manageable.

Little or no memory of treatment

Many patients are surprised to find they remember very little of the appointment. This can make follow-up visits feel much less daunting.

More treatment in fewer visits

A relaxed patient means the dentist can work more efficiently. It is often possible to complete more in a single sedation appointment than would be possible across several standard visits.

Suitable for complex cases

Sedation is particularly helpful for longer or more involved treatments where staying relaxed for an extended period would otherwise be difficult.

Works alongside other comfort measures

We combine sedation with our broader approach to nervous patient care, including aromatherapy, personalised music, and agreed stop signals, for a fully supported experience.

The Sedation Process

Consultation

We discuss your anxiety, your medical history, and the treatment you need. We will recommend the most appropriate form of sedation and answer any questions.

Pre-appointment guidance

We will give you clear written instructions beforehand, including any fasting requirements and whether you need to arrange someone to accompany you.

On the day

The sedation is administered by your dentist, and we allow time for it to take effect before treatment begins. You are monitored throughout.

Treatment

Once you are relaxed, your dentist carries out the agreed treatment. You remain conscious and can signal at any point if you need to pause.

Recovery and aftercare

We will keep you with us until you are ready to leave and provide written aftercare instructions. For IV and oral sedation, you will need a responsible adult to take you home.

What Our Patients Say

FAQs About Dental Sedation

Will I be unconscious during sedation?

No. Dental sedation is not a general anaesthetic. You remain conscious throughout and can hear and respond to your dentist. The medication makes you feel deeply calm and relaxed, and many patients remember very little of the appointment, but you are awake and monitored at all times.

Yes, when carried out by an appropriately trained dental team, sedation is a well-established and safe procedure. We will take a full medical history beforehand and only recommend sedation when it is clinically appropriate for you. You are monitored throughout the appointment.

Not after oral or IV sedation. You will need to arrange for a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for a few hours afterwards. You should also avoid alcohol, operating machinery, and making important decisions for 24 hours. Inhalation sedation wears off quickly and driving restrictions may not apply, but we will advise you specifically.

Most routine and restorative treatments can be carried out under sedation, including fillings, extractions, root canal treatment, and hygiene appointments. We will confirm what is planned at your consultation and make sure you are comfortable with everything before the day.

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons patients come to us for sedation. Whether you have missed a year or a decade of dental care, our approach is the same: no judgement, no pressure, and a plan that works at your pace. Read more on our nervous patients page.
